Indoor Activities To Do With Kids During Lockdown

This article is about some of the many indoor activities to do with kids during this lockdown. However, there are few things that need to discussed first. We are experiencing a once in a lifetime phenomenon. What is happening now hasn’t happened in the last 100 years. And you know what that means? The whole world has been turned upside down. It has been tough for millions of people, but, there are a few of us that are lucky enough to still lead a comfortable life. If you’re a parent this is the best time to connect with your child.

Teach your children things that they don’t learn in school even though you pay an enormous amount every year. Teach them TIME MANAGEMENT! Right now you have all the time in your hands.

Why Time Management?

A lot of parents always wonder why their kids are not performing well in school. Not only the parents, the child themselves wonder if there is something wrong with them. They wonder why can’t they be good at studies while some excel at it? Is it because some are just born that way? NO.

NO, NO, NO!

A big no, we humans are born with some innate traits but most of the things in our lives are learned behaviors. We learn EVERYTHING! Some kid may be good at guitar, kudos to the kid, but that by no means means that kid was born with that talent. It means that that kid not only was willing to learn the guitar, but was also willing to commit to learning it. Now, you may say, that kid was just born with a love for music. But, a lot of us love music, don’t we?

It is commitment that enabled the kid to learn to play and even commitment can be learned and practiced.

PRACTICE!

Imagine a child who is poor in mathematics. Some will say, the child doesn’t practice enough, thus, he/she sucks at math. That could be possible. Some might say, the child has some mental condition leaving him/her without the proper ability to grasp mathematics, that could be true too.

However, most of the time it is because of a lack of practice. And also the lack of commitment to practice. Now, what is the solution to create this commitment? Simple! It’s time management and the Pomodoro Technique.

Now, that you have learnt about the Pomodoro Technique, here are a few indoor activities to do with kids.

  • Origami

According to the dictionary, Origami is the Japanese art of folding paper into decorative shapes and figures. It is also a fun thing that you can teach your kids during the lockdown. It is fun and creative- excellent for the kids, just remember the 25 minute rule!

You can find a number of ideas on the internet, so do some research and list out what you can do with your children.

  • Dance

Yup, just have fun with your cutie pies. Put on some fun songs and have a dance party with your children!

  • Create your own cooking show!

When I was a kid, I loved to act in front of my friends. And most of the time, I would imitate these cooking shows. It was fun and my friends laughed too (hopefully they laughed with me of course XD). So, why don’t you do the same with your kid(s). Learn some quick and easy recipes and cook it together with your kid. Film the whole process and watch it later! It’s getting warm so try some unique juices and smoothies to make as well.

  • Home schooling

Set aside at least an hour to teach your child something useful. There are so many things I wished I learned in school- like how the government works, why we must pay tax, and why we should hold leaders accountable. Teach your kids to be a good citizen, teach them the importance of freedom of speech, teach them to be more open to others’ opinions, etc. Take your time and do this each day. You can even teach these lessons through storytelling which takes me to another point.

  • Read stories together

Take some time off to read to your child some useful stories that teach them to be better human beings. Telling stories is one of the easiest indoor activities to do with kids and is fun too! You can find a lot of good stories on the internet. Just search them on your phone and read out to them. Kids of certain ages love hearing stories, so this would be a fun idea.  And remember to have fun too!

  • Share your life experiences

Now, I want to tell you about something that we do often. We don’t even realize doing this. Almost every time when we share about our past experiences we compare it to the present generation and look down upon them. That’s not helping at all.  Yes, there were less facilities, not much internet penetration, life was tougher etc. It seems it is easier for the new generation and they aren’t grateful for it. However, that’s not it. Well, we should teach them to be grateful by not looking down upon them. Tell your life stories, let them know of the hardships in life, but in a way they can understand. Share examples of how some people are going through a hard time during this COVID-19 induced lockdown.

  • Play Indoor Games

I’m an introvert, so when I tell you something about staying indoors, it is legit! What I used to do when I was a kid is make a paper ball and play cricket. Also, I’m an only child, so I played by myself. See, kids are easily amused. So, make a paper ball and play cricket with them. Or, play hide and seek, board games like carrom, ludo, chess, etc. Another fun game to play is antakshari, and dumb charades.
